BEYOND THIS PROJECT:
Anna’s matched set enables you to add a handmade touch to any special book. If you’re interested in making a large number of bookplates to outfit your entire library, you might consider creating a stamp or stencil to make production speedier (see this page for instructions on making a stamp, and this page to learn about making stencils). See this page for ways to learn more about the art and history of bookplates. And don’t forget—family crests are a traditional element of bookplates, so you might also turn to this page for ideas on researching and designing your unique coat of arms.
FINISHED DIMENSIONS
BOOKPLATE: 4 × 6" (10 × 15cm)
BOOKMARK: 2½ × 7" (6 × 18cm)
SUPPLIES
• Cutting mat
• Metal ruler
• Pencil
• Craft knife with #11 craft knife blades
• 12" (30cm) square sheets of 80lb textured scrapbook cardstock in magenta, light teal, and pink
• 4 × 6" (10 × 15cm) piece transfer paper (optional)
• Craft glue
• Bone folder or spoon
• Adhesive pick-up square (an eraserlike cleaning square sold with paper arts and scrapbooking supplies)
• Fine-tip marker in color of choice
• Hole punch
• Tassel
STEP 1: PREPARE CARDSTOCK
Using a cutting mat, metal ruler, pencil, and craft knife, measure and cut cardstock to following sizes:
• Three 4 × 6" (10 × 15cm) rectangles in magenta, light teal, and pink
• Two 2½ × 7" (6 × 18cm) rectangles in magenta and pink
STEP 2: TRANSFER STENCIL
Print bookplate Stencil A from http://www.abramsbooks.com/bibliocraft/bookplate.html at 160% and use scissors to cut around outside lines to form a 4 × 6" (10 × 15cm) rectangular stencil. On work surface, stack following layers in order, from bottom to top: light teal cardstock, transfer paper, stencil.
Hold the 3 layers in place with one hand, and trace over stencil shapes with pencil; transfer paper will imprint design onto cardstock. If you don’t have transfer paper, shade entire back side of stencil with pencil, lay stencil on top of cardstock with shaded side down, and trace stencil design. Set aside transfer paper and stencil.
STEP 3: CUT SHAPES FROM CARDSTOCK
On cutting mat, use craft knife to cut each shape from cardstock. Set aside petal shapes to use later for matching bookmark. To cut effectively, work from shoulder rather than wrist. Push down into cutting mat and pull knife through paper as you cut. Swivel wrist around corners and curves, using pinkie to pivot.
STEP 4: ATTACH AND CUT SECOND LAYER
Lightly apply glue to back of first layer. Align it with magenta cardstock and glue the two together. Make sure layers are completely adhered with no gaps between them by burnishing surface: Gently rub cardstock surface in a back-and-forth motion using a bone folder or rounded back of spoon.
Using illustration B on this page as your guide, use a pencil to lightly draw the shapes on magenta cardstock (4 inner petals, 1 rectangle interior, and “x” and “i” interiors). On cutting mat, use craft knife to cut out each of these shapes.
STEP 5: ATTACH THIRD (BACKING) LAYER
Lightly apply glue to back of second layer. Align it with pink cardstock and glue these layers together.
